I went to London for two days to see Osbert given the ‘Sunday, Times’ [literary] prize – but two days was quite enough for me. The luncheon party at the prize-giving was delightful, however. There was a man there who began talking to me by saying he knew you. I think I have got his name wrong, but it was either Frazer or Fleming, I think the latter. I thought at first, from his manner with her, that he was Lady Cunard’s social secretary, but realized afterwards that she would scarcely have employed him in that capacity. He told me he was ‘very amused’ to see that you had put my ‘Shadow of Cain’ on your ‘Horizon’ list. He ran no immediate risk by saying this as we were both guests at a luncheon party given in honour of Osbert. He then, until I was at last released from him, expatiated on the other ‘amusing’ and ‘surprising’ choices. [1]
