Twenty minutes later and Ella is down the stairs but exhausted. Shuffling along the bedroom floor and across the landing was painful enough on her leg, but since she needed her good arm to hold the baby, she’d been forced to use her plaster-cast arm to push herself forward. Then, stair by painful stair, she shifted herself down one step at a time, worried she would slip and not be able to stop herself. At least Jacob had removed the protective carpet covering, but it was still sheer agony.

‘Made it,’ she whispers, thankful that the hall floor is wooden and easy to slide along and her wheelchair is in sight in the living room. There are things she needs to reach in the kitchen later.

‘And you need a new name, baby,’ Ella says, laying the little girl down on her back on the rug beside the fireplace. Calling her girl-Zach doesn’t seem right. ‘Don’t move. I’m going to see if he left you any bottles in the fridge.’

Ella climbs up into her chair and wheels into the kitchen.

He didn’t.

She slams the fridge door shut, a few wine bottles rattling. Her stomach churns and rumbles – she’s not been eating well herself. Just the stuff he gives her and that’s usually just a microwaved meal or soup. She wheels around the big kitchen, opening cupboards, banging doors closed, trying not to think of what he did last night.

In the larder cupboard, she finds a tub of powdered baby milk. Reads how to make it up but gets confused by all the measurements, number of feeds, age and weight of baby. In the end, she grabs a washed-up bottle from the draining board, puts in a few scoops of powder and then adds some water from the kettle that’s already been boiled. She knows she has to be careful with germs. She adds the collar and teat to the bottle before giving it a good shake.

Back in the living room and she’s surprised to see girl-Zach has moved about three feet and is lying on her front, playing with the corner of the rug, trying to get it in her mouth.

‘No, no don’t eat that,’ Ella says, reaching down and scooping her up. She cradles the baby in her left arm and the bottle is almost snatched from her when she sees it, urgent whimpering noises gurgling up her throat. She wonders how her real mother is feeling right now, how she is coping with the worry, the sadness and guilt. Ella wishes there was some way she could contact her, a way to let her know she’s looking after her baby, that she’ll do everything she can to get her back to her.

‘I should probably just alert the police and be done with it,’ she whispers down at the baby. But that would mean involving Liz or one of the other women in the street as there’s no landline handset here – just her useless flat mobile. ‘Oh God, but then…’ she adds with a deep sigh, thinking briefly about her old life.
