He went on many quests, and was considered pure for a while. One of his most famous adventures was when he faced the Green Knight. Somehow, women in this story ended up causing Gawain to stumble. This stumbling block was just one of the causes for him to later become a defender of women. In the end, he ended up with three children: Florence, Lovell, and Gingalain. Gawain was a trusted Knight of Arthur's, and so his part in the tales of King Arthur was to loyally serve his kingdom as a mighty Knight of Camelot.

Sir Gawain was one of the greatest among a select number of Knights of the Round Table. In some stories he was the Green Knight as noted in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. According to some legends, he would have been the rightful heir to the throne. He would have taken over the reign of King Arthur as the ruler of Camelot. Gawain is oftentimes portrayed as a courteous, formidable, and compassionate warrior. He was loyal to the King and his family fighting fiercely for them. He was a friend to young Knights and he defended the poor and the women earning the name as “the Maidens' Knight”. He was also a great healer having knowledge of herbs.

Sir Gawain had three children known as Florence, Lovell and Gingalain (also known as Libeaus Desconus). Gawain appeared in English, French and Celtic literature as well as in Italy. His brothers Agravain and Mordred planned a plot to destroy Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere by exposing their love affair. Gawain tried to stop them but they didn’t heed his advice. As a result, Guinevere was sentenced to burn at the stake and Arthur deployed his best Knights including Gawain’s brothers to guard the execution. Gawain nobly refused to take part in the execution even if his own brothers were there. Later, it was said that Lancelot returned to rescue Queen Guinevere and a battle ensued between Lancelot’s Knights and Arthur's Knights including Gawain's brothers who were killed on that day except Mordred.

This turned the friendship of Gawain with Lancelot into hatred. The accidental death of his brothers at Sir Lancelot's hands changed everything and he became a foe despite their earlier friendship. This bitterness against Lancelot made Gawain one of his most sought enemies. His desire for vengeance caused him to draw King Arthur into war with Lancelot in France.

Although he was one of the mighty warriors in King Arthur’s court, Gawain was mortally wounded in battle when he fought with Lancelot. Before Gawain died he repented of the bitterness he had towards Lancelot and it is said that he forgave him. It is also said that, after his death, Lancelot lay at his tomb for two or three nights weeping.

Sir Gawain was the main character in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight poem where he figured prominently in many Arthurian romances. In France, he was generally presented as one who had adventures but did not overshadow the hero, who was either Lancelot or Percival.
