The attack on Doctor Bishop was once again foiled with the aid of the letters in his support. Above all, John was happy to have been an aid in Bishop’s behalf, John may be confined to the asylum but he still had the power of the pen. The Winnemucca Silver State newspaper of Humboldt County was outraged; the paper had been grinding an axe for John C. Smyles for a long time and would have the last word.

On May 21,1889, Silver State Newspaper reported about the asylum management, “A letter from John C. Smyles, dated at the Insane Asylum at Reno, related to the death and burial of Robert Hope. According to the statement of Mr. Smyles, Mr. Hope was kindly cared for during his last illness, and decently buried after death.

The Silver State has no disposition to misrepresent the asylum management. If it is as represented by Mr. Smyles, there is no just cause for complaint, and it is conducted on humane principles, as it should be. It is difficult, however, to believe that a person could be so malevolent as to picture the asylum as a place of torture for the unfortunate inmates, unless there is some foundation for it.

In the case of Bone, referred to in the communication, the clothing worn by him when he escaped from the asylum and reached his friend, was simply a lot of rags, sewn and darned in every conceivable way to hold them together.

While on this subject it might not be impertinent to ask why a person who writes as intelligent and coherent a letter as Mr. Smyles should be kept in an insane asylum?”
