Chapter Twelve
Time seemed to slow down as the world contracted to him and her and the soft night breeze cooling his shirt where it clung to his back. The pub had been packed, and the press of bodies had combined with the lingering heat of the day and his own nervousness to dampen the skin at the base of his spine.
For all his earlier good intentions, heâd fretted the entire walk down from the farm to the pub. It was already clear to him from the few conversations theyâd had that Elizaâs friends were incredibly important to her, and heâd never found it easy to make a good first impression. And with every step that had taken him closer it had also become clear to him that was exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted Elizaâs friends to like him, wanted her to like him because for all their mutual protestations he couldnât stop thinking about her.

Her hands tightened at his waist, pulling him closer in a way that threatened to scatter all his good intentions. He pulled back with a gasp. âWeâre in the yard of your parentsâ pub with about fifty people not more than a dozen feet away.â
Her eyes flared in the soft glow of the overhead lights. âSo, weâre back to being sensible?â
âFor now.â He let her hear the regret in his voice.
âYouâre no fun.â She sighed, then straightened up against the wall, creating space between them. âActually, youâre a lot of fun, but youâre also right unfortunately.â She curled her fingers through his and drew their clasped hands into the space between their bodies. âWhy donât you tell me about your day?â
Jack opened his mouth to tell her about the call from the school, then froze. In his desire to protect Noah heâd made no mention of him to Eliza yesterday, figuring they had plenty of time to see if their relationship was going anywhere before he had to consider the two of them meeting. But the
