CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

Mask Madness-Carnivale is cancelled but everyone is wearing masks.

The making of masks continued the next morning. This time the activity on the terrasse attracted attention from bakery customers queuing to buy their bread. Jenny hung the completed masks along the rail of the terrasse with a sign that Kaz created from an old bread board. It read,

EGAYER VOTRE JOURNEE, MASQUES A VENDRE, cinque euros.

(BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY, MASKS FOR SALE, five euros.)

By the end of the morning, the masks were all sold, and orders taken for the next day. Jenny and the girls were thrilled at the success of their home-made product. Word of the masks spread through the neighbourhood. Lou called their new little business, Mask Madness.

Mask madness continued its activity for a few mornings that week as customers came over for a mask before or after their bakery purchases. As most of the customers were women, the floral masks were very popular, but often the women bought a blue or black one for their husband or other colours for their children and relatives. Jenny had the idea of using embroidery stitches to liven up the plain coloured masks and Lou designed a white toothy smile using zigzag that looked particularly zany on the black masks. It was amazing how a simple functional product brought people together for a chat at a distance, and the glum white masked women of a few days ago transformed into a more festive and happier group of customers. Even René came out to inspect the enterprise and managed a smile.

“I think my business has increased since you now offer the masks,” he commented, casting a shy smile at Jenny.

“Excellent. It is good to hear that we are making a difference in more than one way,” Jenny replied, smiling back with a slight blush.

Sasha came out, too, to choose a mask. He was off to the rotunda in the square, now empty, to stretch at the rail and practice some routines. The Ballet had sent out a video to rehearse with as a supplement to the Zoom rehearsals online. He was putting on a black mask when the two young girls on rollerblades, so often seen out and about, skated up to the rail.

“Oh, they are so cool. Can we buy one each, please, Madame?” they asked excitedly.

“Oh, bonjour Monsieur de Villefranche,” the blondest of the two called out.

“Bonjour, Mimi, ça va?” René replied.

“Bien, Merci, et vous, et Lotte?” Mimi answered politely.

“Nous sommes bien, aussi.” René nodded, smiling at his young neighbour.

Mimi surveyed the assortment of masks on the table and chose a pink one, whilst her taller young companion chose a dark pink floral to match her vibrant skate outfit. The two leggy youngsters then skated off into the market square. They rolled up to Sasha at the rotunda.

“What are you doing? Is that yoga?” asked Mimi.

“Ha ha, no, it’s ballet,” he answered.

“Ballet?” queried Andrea. “Boys don’t do ballet!”

“Oh yes, they do. Have you been to a ballet?” he replied. “The male
