“Don’t worry, you’ll do well.” Aikira took the lamp and exited the room, beckoning me.

I followed her, my mind replaying her words.

“Let’s go outside.”

“I thought it was dangerous to go outside.” The lights I saw yesterday now had a name—wicked souls—and my suspicions proven. Their intentions were ill toward people, but banshees and the wicked souls seemed to be sworn enemies. I had no desire to face them now that I didn’t know how to use my powers at will.

“It is, but I can hold them off until you perform your duty. It won’t take long.” Aikira opened the door and the cool air whipped my hair. The soft smell of the soil, the fragrant flowers blooming despite the adversities the world threw at them brought a feeling of false security. The sense of being outside after what felt like an eternity was liberating. While seemingly foolish, it meant the world to me. I grinned.

“The white flowers ward off anything vile from entering the temple.” Aikira pointed at the white lilies popping against the dark cloak of plant life covering the ground, emitting a white glow.

Frowning, I studied them more intensely, but they looked similar to any lilies I’ve seen in my town. When I turned, my heart raced. Aikira had moved, and I rushed to catch up. Getting lost in the perilous town while the wicked souls were out to get us was far more than desirable.

I trailed behind Aikira, trying to keep my eyes peeled for imminent dangers, but the night’s scents and starlight seduced my eyes wandering around.

Aikira chuckled. “Your realm hasn’t a dark beauty, I take it?”

“No, it’s light. There are flowers everywhere and life. I guess the name speaks for itself.”

“I hope one day I’ll visit. I’ve travelled to the human world and in most parts of the Realm of Silver, but not in yours. When there’s time, you can tell me more. Even before the disappearance of the sun, it held an enchanting dark beauty.” Aikira halted, and I peeked from behind her. “We’re here.”

The crystal lake before us sent waves of peace, soothing my troubled mind. The white lilies surrounding the shore gave a magical feel to the scene resembling a dream.

Beams of light cascaded around the lilies, and I took a step back, thinking they were shadows. They moved on to the lake’s surface, dissolving into shadows of light.

I looked at Aikira, who nodded with a sad smile. “They are the good souls. You’ll need to help them move on to rest. Many of them will be hesitant, but they’ll listen to you.” She motioned to the lake.

“Me? I haven’t done it before. I don’t even know how to start or what to say.”

“It’ll come naturally and I’ll be here if you need me.”

“And if they’re bad souls? Would I need to help them cross too?” The sheer thought of people boasting about the torments they caused sent shivers through my body.

Aikira snorted. “Dear, bad souls don’t want to cross over so they won’t be here.
