A young man with wild, curly hair opened the door the instant Metford knocked. It was super-fast. Almost as if he had been standing on the other side watching for them through the peephole. Ava supposed that was possible, given the fact that she and Metford had been talking loudly in the hallway only moments before.

“Kalen Hamilton,” Ava started, plastering on her best professional manner.

“Was that a question?” Kalen asked.

Metford scoffed and shook his head. “No. We know who you are. She’s simply addressing you. You know, like a semi-professional way of greeting you.”

Kalen gave him a blank look and nodded twice. “Coming in?” he asked, stepping aside and motioning to the room.

“Yes, thank you,” Ava said, wondering if Metford had just defended her or if he was just being his usual sarcastic self with Kalen. Ava stepped into the doorway and smiled at Kalen. He didn’t move. “After you,” she said.

“Oh, right,” he said, chuckling as he walked ahead of them. “It’s like standard, what do you call it? Protocol? Something like that. Don’t let the bad guys get behind you. Always keep them in front of you, or some shit, right?” He flopped on one of the sofa chairs, and it seemed to swallow him.

“Are you a bad guy, Mr. Hamilton?” Metford asked pointedly, walking to the open bathroom door and peering inside.

“What?” Kalen asked, his eyebrows shooting up toward his hairline. “No. I was just saying…” He flipped his hand over as if asking what the hell was going on.

Ava shook her head. “Mr. Hamilton, we just need you to tell us about your time at the lake house.”

“And before we get off on some weird side route here…” Metford shook his head and held out his hand in a stop gesture. “We’re not interested in ghost stories.”

Kalen nodded and grinned. “You talked to Cai and Akira already.”

“You heard us?” Ava asked.

Kalen shook his head. “Have you found out anything about Desiree? What happened to her?”

“We are investigating her disappearance. That’s why we need to know about your time at the lake house, Mr. Hamilton,” Ava said.

“It’s just Kalen. I don’t like Mr. Hamilton.”

Ava nodded. Did he mean that he didn’t like being called Mr. Hamilton, or did he mean he literally didn’t like Mr. Hamilton, as in his father?

Metford finished looking over the place and took a seat at the little round table with Ava. “So, tell us about your time here, Kalen.”

Kalen shrugged and shook his head. “It was a vacation. What is there really to tell about it? We cooked out at the dock. A lot. All of us enjoyed it. We drank a boatload of beer and listened to Trevon’s horrible music way too loud for far too long every evening. We sat on the dock and talked. Jumped off it into the water to swim. Paddled around in those stupid little boats.” He shrugged again and shook his head. “Now, have you found out anything about Desiree? Has anyone seen her in, like, another town or anything? Has any of her stuff turned up?”

Ava shook her head.
