The following Monday, Diana brought Paul’s dad’s impact wrench, the one item from that particular garage that Clarissa hadn’t sold, and handed it to Paul before school.

“I found this by the trash behind the brewery. I saw the name ‘Jeffrey’ on the box and I wondered if it was your dad’s.”

“Damn,” Paul laughed. “No, it’s my brother Doug’s. He left all his tools here when he moved to Zurich. He’s the carpenter of the family.”

“Not your dad?”

Paul laughed. “My dad doesn’t know one side of a drill from the other. He tried to use the saw last year and almost hurt himself.”

“That’s funny.”

Paul chucked the tool in his locker. “I bet he didn’t even know this thing was missing. I wonder how the hell it ended up out there?”

“Who knows,” Diana said.
