As they approached the Farrell House Hotel, Molly gasped. âWhooee.â
âAnd this is off Portsmouth Square,â he said. âA few blocks that way are the really big hotels and gaming houses.â
âThis isnât big?â
âThis is considered medium,â he said. âCome on, letâs go inside.â
As they entered the opulent lobby, she asked, âWho owns this place?â
âA good friend of mine named Duke Farrell,â Clint said. He didnât bother telling her that he owned a piece of it, too.
As they approached the desk, he saw that the clerk was a stranger to him. Personnel changed constantly in the hotel business. The handsome young man watched as they walked toward him, his eyes roaming up and down Mollyâs body. When they stopped, she gave him a hard stare.
âCan I help you, sir?â he asked. âMaâam?â
âYes,â Clint said, âis Duke around?â
âMr. Farrell is in his office,â the young man said. âCan I sayââ
âI know the way,â Clint said. âThanks.â
âSir, you canâtââ
âDonât worry, son,â Clint said. âItâs okay. Weâre old friends.â
He led Molly down a hallway with the young clerk still stammering behind them. When he reached the office door, he knocked and then opened it. Duke Farrell looked up from his desk.
âSo, you finally gave up on your Barbary Coast palace?â he asked.
âYep,â Clint said. âWe need a room, Duke. Got anything available?â
Farrell smiled and said, âBest room in the house, for you.â
He came around the desk and the two men embraced warmly. Farrell was barely five-foot-five, but he was a big man in Clintâs eyes. As always, he was wearing a very expensive suit, and his haircut was recent and impeccable.
âDuke, this is Molly.â
âHello, Molly. You smell mighty good.â
âJust had a bath,â she said. âItâs nice to meet you, Mr. Farrell.â
âDuke,â Farrell said, âjust call me Duke.â
âOkay, Duke.â
Farrell looked at Clint. The smaller man could have been forty or fifty, Clint had never known his true age. He had spent many years as a con man before becoming a hotel owner.
âI got your message,â Farrell said. âDid I help?â
âYou helped a lot, but now I need a room here.â
âYouâve always got a room here, Clint,â Farrell said. âYou know that.â
âThanks, Duke.â
âWant to tell me what itâs about?â Farrell asked.
âNot yet.â
âAm I gonna get shot at? Or arrested?â
âShot at, maybe,â Clint said, âbut not arrested.â
âWell, thatâs somethinâ,â Farrell said. âCome on, letâs get you that room.â
