Chapter 13
Execution
Amana returned to Uzoma the following morning as he had promised. They started with the ball balance training. Amana was doing even worse now. Both Ayo and Nya were being held captive in Bajok. Yemi had been able to talk the Chief down from executing Nya on sight—but only after the Chief found out about how she had helped capture Ayo. Though she was safe for now, there was still a pit in Amana’s stomach.
Kor'de Neema had tried to negotiate for Nya’s immediate release, straight back to Ya-Seti. But the Chief had denied the request.
“She’s had chance,” the Chief had said in his broken accent.
Nya, surprisingly, had accepted her fate—no choice words for the Chief or the captors who tugged at her arms. Amana could not bring himself to say anything to her. She was still angry with him about what had been said. Ayo, on the other hand, looked as though he might soil his pants at any moment. Even when they brought him food, he thought they were coming for his head. It was going to be difficult getting concrete answers out of him. But Nanga had already thought up a few ways to get Ayo to talk. Nanga’s methods were about the only thing he and Nya could agree on, though Nanga also campaigned for her immediate execution.
When the Chief heard about the attack on Uzoma, he stationed two Bajok warriors at the elder’s home. Amana had waved at them when he had arrived, but neither acknowledged the gesture, intent on watching the farmlands.
With everything on Amana’s mind, he could not balance the ball for more than a few seconds.
“What happened?” Uzoma asked.
“You’re right, women are distractions.”
“It’s not all women that can be distractions. Just the ones we care for.”
“I don’t …”
“You don’t know it yet, but you do,” Uzoma said. He walked to Amana and took the Gods’ Glass. “No balancing today. I have something else for you.” Uzoma searched inside his chest. “You promised you’d bring my wife into good health. I think it’s only right I do right by you.”
“The baby? It’s okay? Did she give birth?”
Uzoma shook his head. “No, nothing like that yet. But I’ve been through this twice before. And Esi looks better than the others. I have a good feeling she’ll pull through.”
Amana smiled, but after the kishi attack, he had been thinking of something.
“Yemi said the kishi put a curse on you,” Amana said this slowly, seeing if this was a subject he was allowed to comment on. “Is that why your wives have been dying?” He was glad to hear she was doing all right—and that he was the one to help—but he could not help wondering if his efforts would ultimately be futile. He was no alchemist after all. There was no special tea he could brew to lift any kind of curse placed on Esi by the kishi.
“Yes, those are the rumors that have sprouted around the village,” Uzoma said. “But no, I am only cursed with an aging body.
