Bloodiest Crime Scene of His Career

When police showed a short time later, they found what one cop later called the bloodiest crime scene of his decadeslong career.

The carnage done to the bodies made it evident that both Diane and Alan had been shot with a high-powered rifle.

Diane was the worst. She lay in her bed, shot in the head, and was unrecognizable as the head of a human being. There was blood spattered all over the walls, and later investigators were to find a piece of bone from her head in a nearby hall.

Alan Johnson was also in the bedroom, lying face down, and he had been shot once in the chest. His body was wet with water. He had been taking a shower, which was still running. The scenario, as worked out by the police, was that Diane was shot first. Her husband had been alerted by the horrific blast while he was in the shower down the hall, and had come out and walked down the hall toward the bedroom to investigate. His assailant had confronted him point-blank and shot him in the chest just above the heart.

Police questioned Sarah outside the house, and it was then that they got their first inkling or suspicion that she might be involved in the murders. The sheriff, whose name was Femling, noticed that as she leaned against a fence and answered his questions and the bodies of her mother and father, in body bags, were removed from the house and paraded past her, she didn’t act like a young girl who had just lost her parents in a double homicide. Later the sheriff was to say: “There is something going on here. I mean, most sixteen-year-olds would be hiding. They would not want to sit there on a fence and watch their parents come out in body bags. No way!”

The cops had arrived quickly at the scene, and one of them detained a garbage truck that was on its regular rounds in the neighborhood. They were to find some crucial evidence in the truck.

The investigation was launched, but no initial arrests were made. The family, including Sarah’s grandmother, aunt, and brother, Matt, all supported her. The assumption was that someone outside the family had done the killings. That someone had something against Alan, or Diane, or both, but up to that point, no motive, which is often the royal road to the killer, had been unearthed.

As they normally do, investigators conducted their investigation using what cops call “victimology”—talking with as many people as possible who know the victims and the family. And, as usual, they worked the case from the inside out, trying to determine if Sarah or another family member was involved. “Murder,” said one cop, “is usually a family affair.”
