When Nora heard about the event in Anascaul at the famous South Pole Inn for a trad music evening, she was keen to come with Lily. The pub had been built by Tom Crean, the hero of the Antarctic expedition at the beginning of the last century, and was a popular tourist spot. ‘Fabulous pub,’ Nora said as they were walking back from the shed with their now-restored bikes just after lunch. ‘Great food and now music, of course I’ll go with you. It will be a lovely break from all the work with the party planning. What’s the name of the band?’

‘The Fiddler’s Elbow,’ Lily replied. ‘Dominic’s band.’

‘Even better,’ Nora said. ‘I could do with a night out and Martin wants to watch some boring old documentary on TV tonight.’

‘Pity we can’t cycle there,’ Lily said, ‘but we don’t have lights on the bikes yet. In any case there’ll be heavy showers tonight before the weather clears.’

‘That steep hill up to the village could be too much before we’re really fit,’ Nora remarked.

‘Very true.’

‘The ride around Slea Head tomorrow will be a good test.’

‘We’ll probably be very stiff and sore the day after.’

‘I’m sure we will.’ Nora was silent for a while. Then she looked at Lily. ‘I was wondering if we shouldn’t do a thorough search for the deeds in the house? They could be stuck in a cupboard somewhere you haven’t looked.’

‘Granny said she’s looked everywhere,’ Lily replied. ‘If they were in the house I’m sure she would have found them. But I’m going to go through Caroline’s notebook that I found in the trunk again. I just skimmed through it the first time, but maybe she wrote something about the deeds that I didn’t see.’

‘Caroline’s notebook?’ Nora stopped walking. ‘That sounds interesting.’

‘It was mostly full of sketches and then a little comment about someone that Cornelius used to visit,’ Lily said. ‘She didn’t like him and was worried about what they were up to. And she turned out to be right, of course. There was nothing in what I read about the deeds, but I thought I’d look through it again to see if I missed something.’

‘Let’s do that together,’ Nora suggested. ‘Page by page. Two pairs of eyes are better than one.’

‘Good idea,’ Lily agreed and started to walk faster. ‘We have a little time before we have to go and help Granny.’

‘I’ll make tea,’ Nora offered when they arrived at the gatehouse.

Lily leaned her bike against the wall. ‘Great. I’ll get the notebook and start looking through it. Then you could have a go.’

Lily went to her bedroom and got the notebook from her handbag, then went back downstairs to sit on the sofa with it. She looked up briefly as Nora entered with two mugs of tea and then dived in again while taking occasional sips of her drink. Then she handed the notebook to Nora. ‘Here, you take a look with fresh eyes. Her handwriting is quite difficult to read.’

Nora sat down and started to go through the notebook, scanning each page intently.
