CHAPTER SEVEN
Walking into Mavisâ quarters, I saw that his room was as bad a shape as his church. Empty wine bottles littered the floor. At one point, I took a cloth from my pocket to guard against the roomâs odor.
âJesus,â I said with disgust. âWho died in here?â
Angry and a little revolted, I walked over to Mavis and woke him up.
Sleepy and still a bit drunk, Mavis glumly said, âYes, whatâs wrong?â
âIâll tell you whatâs wrong, Father. This church hasnât had its morning mass.â
âSo, what?â Mavis laughed.
I gave Mavis a look of shock. Why would he, a Man of God, not want to teach the Word of the Lord?
âIt is our duty as Men of God to teach His will,â I explained.
âMen of God?â Mavisâ voiced with pain. He gave out a cheap laugh. âPreaching words that neither comfort nor improve. Itâs all garbage.â
I handed Mavis his clothes, swallowing down my anger.
âEven so, Father, you will get up, get dressed, and get ready for morning mass.â
Having filled Mavisâ drunken logic, I stormed out of the room. It took all in me not to leap out at the man in a violent rage. I can still see his moving image, sitting on his bed, holding his priest uniform, and looking down at it. He threw his clothes on the floor and cried.
Above Mavisâ bed, a crucifix hung in a sea of dusty loneliness. Mavis looked at it as if pleading with God.
âPlease, dear Lord, It is not yet time.â The old priest prayed. âNot him. He is still too young. Please, donât take him.â
I found myself frozen between his door and the hallway outside his room. I couldnât take my eyes off of his Cross.
It was a rather plain cross, made of walnut. A queasy feeling overcame me, and I started feeling a little lightheaded. At first, I thought it had been my mind playing tricks on me, but after my eyes refocused, I could see that his crucifix began to move by itself.
No one was touching the cross, and I got the impression that it was an evil force doing the moving. Then, finally, the crucifix rocketed off its nail, hitting the floor.
