CHAPTER 20

Ashlee stood, absorbing what Gemna had just told her. Peace from the Jade King’s point of view meant the annihilation of the Gemstone people and the conquering of their lands. No wonder Gemna’s family were so intent on halting the prophecy.

The idea that she currently resided in a world where at any moment she could be obliterated along with everyone else here struck her. A sense of fear churned in her belly. She didn’t want to be in this place anymore.

Ashlee stared at the archway, watching the shadowy creatures move around out of the corner of her eye. “You said you’ve been asking these arch creatures to bring you someone from the other side. That, at first, they told you about someone who looked like they were made of jade and sitting on a throne. You thought that was the Jade King, right?”

“That is correct.”

Ashlee couldn’t help but notice the detachment in Gemna’s voice. This latest revelation seemed to have wiped her of any remaining hope. Well perhaps there was another way this situation could be approached.

“But the creatures couldn’t get the man on the throne. They brought Yir instead.”

“Yes.”

Ashlee studied her little flying friend. “Why?”

Gemna’s eyes, which had glazed over a bit, cleared. “Why what?”

“Why didn’t they bring you the man on the throne?”

“They could not.”

“Why not? Was he too big? Too heavy?”

Gemna frowned slightly. “I don’t know. I never asked.”

“Could you ask now?”

“To what end?”

Ashlee forced the anxiety in her stomach to keep at bay while she spoke. “If the Jade King is there, now, maybe the creatures can bring him here. You can, I don’t know, put him in a cell or something.”

A flicker of movement crossed Gemna’s face. “I had not thought of that. I only focused on pulling in someone who could tell me what the Jade King’s plan was, someone on his side, helping him, but I never thought about the source himself.” She took a seat in front of the arch, her back straight, her arms relaxed at her sides. Ashlee moved to get a better view and saw Gemna had closed her eyes. Her lips moved, but no sound came out.

Ashlee shifted her gaze once again to the archway. She could still tell there was movement, but couldn’t make out specific shapes. As she watched, the movement increased.

Several minutes later, Gemna opened her eyes, her face contemplative.

“What did they say?” Ashlee asked.

“They said they only bring those that are at an end. The Jade King has not arrived yet.” She paused. “I’m not sure what that means.”

Ashlee ran over the words in her head. They stirred something inside her mind, someone else’s words from what seemed like a lifetime ago.

“Shon,” she whispered.

“Excuse me?”

“Oh, sorry. I was just thinking out loud.” Ashlee chewed her bottom lip. “I suppose I might as well tell you. I knew someone who could call the archway wherever he wanted it to appear. But he said the first time it showed up, it was because he wanted to die.
