Mr. Darcy held out his arm, and she took it, resting her gloved fingers in the crook of his elbow.
He led her through the room, smiling and nodding at acquaintances, but never slowing his pace.
What will we say if somebody asks where we are going? Elizabeth wondered. Will they be able to tell what we are doing? Will we disgrace ourselves?
She decided she would feign a headache, if asked. Then Mr. Darcy might say they were seeking fresh air, or somewhere quiet to sit. It would be plausible, and she doubted anyone would mind. Ladies sometimes became indisposed, and it was perfectly respectable for their husbands to take them somewhere to recover.
But in the event, nobody stopped them or questioned them. The ball was so packed with guests, nobody seemed to give their passage a second thought.
Elizabeth was relieved that her excuses were not required. She hated lying, even for minor reasons. It would be very difficult to hide her guilty feelings if they were confronted, and she did not altogether trust that she could make a convincing fist of it.
The long corridor outside the main reception area was cool and peaceful. A woven Persian runner rug covered the polished floorboards, making their footsteps almost silent.
The portraits on the wall seemed to be watching Elizabeth. She amused herself by imagining they knew what she and Mr. Darcy were about to do. By the end of the Persian runner, she almost fancied one of them winked at her.
Mr. Darcy turned left at the end of the corridor, into a darker hallway.
“There is a second, smaller library this way,” he said. “I spent many happy hours there, as a boy. Our host’s father had a prodigious collection of nature journals, which he kept in this space rather than in the main library. He valued his privacy, and enjoyed studying the journals away from the main house.”
“How interesting,” Elizabeth said, panting a little. Mr. Darcy’s pace was fast, and she did not wish to ask him to slow down. She was as eager to attain privacy as he was.
“There is also a very comfortably upholstered chaise longue in the room,” he added, with a glance. “I think a lady would find it most agreeable to recline on.”
Elizabeth’s heart pounded even harder.
When at last they reached the library, Mr. Darcy stopped. He knocked at the door.
They waited a few moments. Elizabeth held her breath, hoping that there was nobody inside.
There was not.
They had the room to themselves.
With a smile, Mr. Darcy led his wife inside, and closed the door. Turning the key, he removed it and placed it on the top of the door frame.
“We shall not be disturbed,” he said, as he pulled his wife close for a kiss. “Now we are alone, at last.”
