Chapter 10

William came back to the house close to dinner time. He looked exhausted. He also had a small cut and swelling at the corner of his mouth. “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!” Aoife crossed herself. “Is she okay?”

“She’s fine. I wouldn’t have left her otherwise. Her da got one shot in before her mother called him to heel. I can’t say I blame him. What would Da have done in his shoes?”

“If some lad brought my sweet girl home in the family way, I’d have throttled the wee mongrel. You were lucky it was only one shot to the gob,” David said plainly.

“Yes, well.” William rubbed his jaw absently. Then he shrugged. “After things calmed down, he poured us both a stiff drink. I told them I love Katie with all my heart. We’re to be married here, to keep the local busy bodies away.”

Aoife said, “I called Father Michael. It’s early enough to get married on the island, if she’d rather. She shouldn’t have to hide.”

“I’ll ask her. She worries about a scandal. It’s a small community.”

Aoife looked at him, smiling. “You’re a good man, William. The circumstances aren’t ideal, but I saw it that first time we met her. She’s the one. Forever and always. This is no scandal. It’s a blessing, despite what the others might say.”

Sorcha watched this beautiful family and her heart swelled with love and admiration. Her mother would have said something very similar. Every woman in Katie’s position should have this sort of support. She wasn’t sure whether to add anything to the discussion or not, but she wanted to say something.

Aoife didn’t miss a step. “What is it, Sorcha?”

“I was just wondering if maybe it wouldn’t be prudent to keep the pregnancy quiet from the rest of her family. Apparently her sisters can be quite…”

“Self-righteous?” William offered. She nodded. “Yes, Katie said as much. They agreed. I’m sure there will be speculation when the child comes, but it’s none of their business. Sisters or not.”

Aoife stood, wanting to have the conversation over. “That’s enough for now. Sorcha, dear. I’d love to hear about your work.” The men groaned.

“Why do women abhor violence or bloodiness in a rugby match, but have no issue with discussing childbirth at length?” William said just as Maeve came in from school.

Maeve said, “The perfect way to clear the room of men. Talk about our girly bits.” They all laughed, the tension of the day easing.
