Virginia stares glumly out the window at the sprawling, gray-brick Anglican church next to the old folksâ home, both of which are set back from the road on a lush green corner lot in Lytton Park. When Tate pulls open the car door for her, Virginia doesnât budge.
âIt would be so much less off-putting if they held these things in a hotel lobby or a coffee shop,â Virginia says.
âItâll be fine,â Tate assures her.
âCan I change my mind?â
âLet me grab your cane and Iâll help you out.â
âI canât.â
âOf course you can,â Tate says matter-of-factly. âIâll come with you if you want.â
âI donât want.â
Tate reaches for her motherâs elbow and gently tugs her out of the car. Virginia leans heavily on Tateâs shoulder with one hand and on her cane with the other, finally managing to free her body from the car.
âDo you need my help walking you into the building?â
Virginia shakes her head, dangerously close to tears.
âIâm going to do some errands and then Iâll meet you right here at this bench,â Tate says, using the same maternal voice Virginia used to use on her decades ago when she would drop her off on the first day of school or at a new ballet class. Mommy will be back to pick you up at three. What a twisted sense of humor the universe has, bringing old people full circle like this.
All of this is Hayleyâs fault. Hayley, with her spiritual sound bites and her minty-fresh optimism.
âHappiness is a habit, you know.â Thatâs what Hayley said to Virginia the day she brought up the group again.
Virginia looked up at her with a sudden intense craving for a cigarette.
âYouâre giving me that look, Virginia.â
âWhat look?â
âYou know exactly what look,â Hayley said, unstrapping the weights from Virginiaâs ankles. She sat down cross-legged on the floor next to Virginiaâs prostrate upper body. âHave you given any thought to the elder abuse group?â
âSome.â
âI know Iâm your physiotherapist, but the mental and emotional work is super important for your physical recovery as well. Youâre not exactly recovering at an impressive clip, if you donât mind my saying so.â
A cool draft of peppermint wafted around Virginiaâs face.
âAt some point, you have to want to get better,â Hayley said. âAnd I donât just mean walking normally again.â
âIâm old. It takes longer.â
Hayley rolled her eyes and sighed. âItâs not your age,â she said. âItâs your attitude. Iâve worked with plenty of clients older than you and theyâve made more progress in less time.â
Virginia lolled her head away petulantly and didnât respond.
âYour body has experienced a serious trauma,â Hayley said, softening her tone. âAnd so has your psyche. All of you needs to heal.â
âI donât belong in an elder abuse group,â Virginia muttered. âIâm not an elder.â
âYou just said yourself youâre old.â
Virginia frowned.
âHave you ever heard of Psycho-Cybernetics?â
âI hate science.â
âGod, Virginia, can you please just open your mind a crack? Itâs a book.â
âFine. No, I havenât heard of it. Please tell me about it while Iâm trapped here on my back.
