At the bottom was an address and a map showing how to get to it from the Bleecker Street subway station, though Lucy had no idea where that was. She crumpled the flyer in her hand, but there was no trash can on the corner, so she stuffed it into her pocket as the light changed and she followed the group through the crosswalk.
After another block, the narrow street opened back up into a wide, almost midwestern sky. At first all she could see below was a crowd surrounding a chain-link fence. Though it was just an ordinary weekday, there was a crush of people already there. Lucy moved slowly through them until she arrived at the fence, which marked off the edge of the abyss. She looked down into the enormous hole. People were working down there, but what Lucy saw wasn’t a construction site. She saw instead the locus of a great destructive act. The sheer size of the hole gave a horrific sense of the extent of that destruction. She thought of her friend who’d asked about “visiting 9/11,” and it did seem that she was glimpsing something torn from the fabric of ordinary time.
A feeling of vertigo shook her as she looked down into it. She grabbed at the fence for balance. The sun had broken through since she’d gotten off the train, and she felt trapped in the heat. She imagined she could see the shades of all the lives that had been swallowed up in this place. She was glad she had come alone, because she couldn’t possibly have told Sam what she felt in that moment—that she stood on the boundary of holy ground, in a place that had been sanctified by blood. She wasn’t religious—in this she and Sam were in complete agreement—but she couldn’t imagine any way to make sense of what she was seeing but with such words.
A new wave of people pushed in behind her, and she broke away from the fence, fighting through this crowd. She hurried several blocks, until she was back among the men in suits. How strange to see so many people going about their normal days so close to what she’d just seen. It seemed almost disrespectful, though many of these people had probably been there that morning, forced to take the full measure of something that had come to Lucy only as a kind of rumor.
