TWENTY-EIGHT
RICARDO
Ricardo unbuckled his seat belt as the taxi pulled up outside the Sunâs Rays. He paid the driver and stepped out into the darkness. Music and laughter spilled out as a couple left and the smell of kebab hung in the air. Hurrying in, he waited at the bar for a man to be served, then the woman from earlier smiled at him as she came over. âWhat would you like?â
âIâm okay for a minute. I need to speak to Liam.â
âHeâll be about ten minutes, heâs running a bit late.â
âActually, Iâll have a Courvoisier with ice, please.â
His fingers had a slight tremble to them. The thought of someone following him earlier had set him on edge. He gazed around wondering if his pursuer was in the pub but he couldnât make out who was in the lounge on the other side of the pub. That person wasnât in the bar. The jukebox stopped playing and all that was left was the hum of voices.
âThere you go.â As the server placed the glass down, the ice chinked before sinking to the bottom of the glass. He took the seat right next to the fire and undid the top few buttons on his coat, enjoying the warmth. He and Bettina had enjoyed a post-dinner brandy together in the past. Back home they had a huge open fireplace that crackled on the winter nights. He had no one to share that with any more with his sons now married and Maria dead. The fireâs light reflected a beautiful spectrum of colour as he swirled the ice.
He glanced at his watch, noticing that fifteen minutes had passed and Liam still hadnât turned up. âHey,â the server shouted. âLiamâs just passed the window.â
âThank you.â He looked up, waiting for the young man to come in.
The twenty-something, long-haired student type walked in and fist bumped one of the customers he called Derek.
âLiam, thereâs a chap here to see you.â
He turned and looked at Ricardo, taking him in.
âIâm really grateful youâre able to speak with me, can I get you a drink?â Ricardo asked the man.
âA lager would be great.â He took his sweater off to reveal a T-shirt that said âSex Godâ on the front. His face was pale and sickly on a skinny body. Ricardo wondered if Bettinaâs friend existed on cheap lager and pot noodles.
Ricardo got up and ordered the man a drink as well as another brandy. âMake it a double,â he called out as the woman was about to pour it. With the couple of mini-bar drinks heâd had at the hotel, he was beginning to feel tipsy but he didnât care. He watched as Liam got comfortable on the seat opposite to Ricardoâs, just under the window. He placed a satchel on the floor and a book spilled out. The spine on the book mentioned the words, contract law. Liam must be a student. Ricardo hurried over with the drinks, spilling lager over his hand as he walked.
âIâm Ricardo, I suppose you know why Iâm here.
