THE DOCTOR WALKED tiredly into the waiting room and Katie stood up.
âEverything is fine,â he said quickly.
âThank the lord,â said Connie.
âHarryâs just had a bit of a heart episode. Weâve had a look at him and done some tests, and weâre going to be fitting him with a pacemaker.â
âJesus,â said Katie.
âItâs a common operation,â said the doctor. âAnd as long as all goes well, he can come home tomorrow.â
âThat soon?â asked Isla.
âAbsolutely,â smiled the doctor. âNow, just give us a few more minutes and then you can all go through to see him, heâs asking after you all. Iâll send a nurse in when heâs ready for you.â
âThank you,â Katie said, but he was already leaving. She sat down again, suddenly tired.
âWhat a relief,â Sophie said.
âWe were right to bring him in though,â said Connie.
âYou still drive like a maniac,â said Sophie.
âShe got us here fast enough,â said Isla.
Katie blushed again at the memory of the journey, the feeling of sitting on Islaâs lap, the sensation of her arms on her waist, her thumb on her hipbone.
âYou know, Iâm rather starting to like you,â said Connie to Isla. âYouâre growing on me.â
âQuite the compliment,â Isla said, glancing over at Katie who smirked back.
Nothing could happen, nothing should happen, but suddenly Katie really wasnât so sure that she agreed with Islaâs logic anymore. Because something was definitely happening, had already started happening, and she wasnât altogether sure that she could make it stop.
âWell, you know, being back in here, in this waiting room brings back memories,â Connie sniffed.
âOf what?â asked Katie.
âOf waiting for you the other day, of course,â said Connie. âAnd what with that, and with Isla here turning out to be not quite as⦠difficult as weâd all thought, well, Iâm starting to regret what we said just a little.â
Katie frowned. âWhat you said? About what? What are you talking about?â
âOh, about what we said to Isla,â said Connie. âYou know, threatening her and all so that sheâd stay and help you. I just feel a little bad about it, forcing her to stay, maybe it wasnât a very nice thing to do.â
âForcing her to stay?â Katie could hear her own voice, hear how high it sounded. She turned and looked at Sophie. âDo you have anything to say about all of this?â she asked.
Sophie exhaled and glared at Connie. âUh, Iâm not sure nowâs the time and place for this conversation.â
âOh yes it is,â said Katie. âBecause if you donât tell me right now, Iâm taking the keys and the car and stranding the whole damn lot of you here.â
âEven Isla?â asked Connie sweetly.
Katie growled at her. âJust start talking.â
