THE DOCTOR WALKED tiredly into the waiting room and Katie stood up.

“Everything is fine,” he said quickly.

“Thank the lord,” said Connie.

“Harry’s just had a bit of a heart episode. We’ve had a look at him and done some tests, and we’re going to be fitting him with a pacemaker.”

“Jesus,” said Katie.

“It’s a common operation,” said the doctor. “And as long as all goes well, he can come home tomorrow.”

“That soon?” asked Isla.

“Absolutely,” smiled the doctor. “Now, just give us a few more minutes and then you can all go through to see him, he’s asking after you all. I’ll send a nurse in when he’s ready for you.”

“Thank you,” Katie said, but he was already leaving. She sat down again, suddenly tired.

“What a relief,” Sophie said.

“We were right to bring him in though,” said Connie.

“You still drive like a maniac,” said Sophie.

“She got us here fast enough,” said Isla.

Katie blushed again at the memory of the journey, the feeling of sitting on Isla’s lap, the sensation of her arms on her waist, her thumb on her hipbone.

“You know, I’m rather starting to like you,” said Connie to Isla. “You’re growing on me.”

“Quite the compliment,” Isla said, glancing over at Katie who smirked back.

Nothing could happen, nothing should happen, but suddenly Katie really wasn’t so sure that she agreed with Isla’s logic anymore. Because something was definitely happening, had already started happening, and she wasn’t altogether sure that she could make it stop.

“Well, you know, being back in here, in this waiting room brings back memories,” Connie sniffed.

“Of what?” asked Katie.

“Of waiting for you the other day, of course,” said Connie. “And what with that, and with Isla here turning out to be not quite as… difficult as we’d all thought, well, I’m starting to regret what we said just a little.”

Katie frowned. “What you said? About what? What are you talking about?”

“Oh, about what we said to Isla,” said Connie. “You know, threatening her and all so that she’d stay and help you. I just feel a little bad about it, forcing her to stay, maybe it wasn’t a very nice thing to do.”

“Forcing her to stay?” Katie could hear her own voice, hear how high it sounded. She turned and looked at Sophie. “Do you have anything to say about all of this?” she asked.

Sophie exhaled and glared at Connie. “Uh, I’m not sure now’s the time and place for this conversation.”

“Oh yes it is,” said Katie. “Because if you don’t tell me right now, I’m taking the keys and the car and stranding the whole damn lot of you here.”

“Even Isla?” asked Connie sweetly.

Katie growled at her. “Just start talking.”
