The drugs had sent Greg off into oblivion, but even then, the pain had persisted, breaking through the dreamlike state he had so craved.
There was no telling how long Greg had lain there while the virus took him. As with John, the heroin had acted as a buffer protecting the higher centres of his brain.
Eventually, the pain had diminished, but only because the conversion to vampire was complete. With the dormant vampire genes activated, Marburg-V had no ability to kill him, any damage it tried to inflict instantly repaired on the cellular level. Now only a remnant of the virus remained, enough to infect anyone he came into contact with.
Despite Gregâs newfound health, he didnât feel good. No, he felt anything but.
In the ruined kitchen, he sat with his head bowed. There was an urgency within him, an insistence that he consume. The knowledge of what was now his food existed, present in the front of his mind, and it horrified him. That thought tried to dominate, to push the humanity that remained out, but Greg resisted. Heâd never been one to want to hurt others, and the demands of his self conflicted with who he thought he was.
That was why he had embarked on this frenzy of destruction, an attempt to distract himself from the incessant hunger. Heâd been an addict for long enough to know what would happen if he gave into it, too experienced in life to realise that the surrender was inevitable. And with what he had seen in the mirror, Greg realised he was more than capable of meeting the growling demands his stomach was making.
There was a fire in his belly, like nothing heâd ever known. It gnawed at him, a hunger that had to be quenched. Greg had tried eating normal food, even raw meat, but it had all been rejected violently. The taste had been so repugnant, he hadnât even been able to swallow a single morsel, the contents of his fridge now mushed all over the kitchen floor.
Greg knew other things about himself. For example, upon seeing his reflection in the bathroom mirror, he had punched the glass, several pieces embedding themselves in his knuckles. The fact his fist had also gone through half the retaining wall had given him a glimpse of his new strength. The way his skin had healed after he had picked the glass fragments out had taught him how his flesh could repair itself.
The nightmare of it. To become this thing, and not even be able to escape through suicide. To know that you were now a danger to all those around you.
âYou in there, Greg?â the voice of Malone challenged. Greg had never liked the officer, for he had met many with Maloneâs character in his time. There were some of the thin blue line who honoured the uniform and the duty it represented, people like Doug. Fair minded, willing to see the good in people and often give allowances to those who needed help rather than judgement and punishment.
