I take a bus to Crawley and walk to Arun Devi’s dental practice. It’s in a low-slung brick building in a residential area with a large sign at the front saying, Devi’s Dentistry for a Perfect Smile. There are two black Porsches Cayenne out front. One has the numberplate T33TH LD and the other T33TH AD. How very cute to have matching cars and numberplates. I bet that cost them a fair bit. I wonder what Mrs Devi is doing here. Does she work in the practice too? I open the door and walk into an open plan area with a reception desk and a waiting room filled with brightly coloured armchairs. The place is empty other than Louise Devi, who is sitting behind the reception desk. She looks up as I enter, her smile dazzling, her teeth almost a fluorescent white.

‘Good afternoon. How can I help you?’

‘I need to see a dentist and I’ve been recommended your practice.’

‘We’re only taking on private patients at the moment. Is that okay?’

‘Sure,’ I say. Not a hope in hell I can afford that.

‘In which case, please can you fill in one of our new patient forms?’ She hands me a clipboard with a form attached to it, along with a blue biro.

‘I was with Josh Letwin before,’ I say, trying hard not to smile. ‘I’m sorry about what happened.’ I glance at Louise Devi and her face clouds over. ‘Were you good friends with Imogen Letwin?’

It seems that my hunch is right. Louise Devi’s eyes narrow and her plump lips tighten.

‘No,’ she spits.

‘It’s such a shame what happened,’ I repeat.

‘What do you know about it?’ she asks with a hiss. Her cheeks redden and I realise I’ve touched a nerve.

‘Imogen feels really sad about it,’ I say.

‘Sad!’ Louise exclaims. ‘She might have thought about our friendship before screwing…’ Her hand springs up to cover her mouth.

I scribble down a fake address in Horsham and a false mobile phone number then hand over my completed form. I whisper conspiratorially, ‘I’m sorry for how the Letwins treated you.’

‘Not Josh, just Imogen. She’s a bitch,’ Louise Devi says. ‘How well do you know her?’

‘Well enough to agree with your description. I think she’s up to it again.’ I’m not positive what I’m suggesting here but I have a suspicion and I’m shocked. This isn’t the Imogen I know.

‘Poor Josh. He deserves better. Arun was a bloody idiot. He swore to me that it was a one-off, and I chose to believe him. He said that if I told Josh the truth, both our marriages would have been over and the dental practice destroyed, so I bit my tongue but I insisted we had nothing to do with the Letwins again. She got away lightly, did Imogen. If it had been up to me, I’d have told the world that she’s a cheating bitch. We would have moved away; it’s just the kids are so well settled in their school and it didn’t seem right to move them.
