The train to Paris left early the next morning, and with it, Elana and I left the 14th century behind. What of the casting mold for shroud badges, that elusive, ever so humble medieval antiquity that brought us to Lirey in the first place? Yes, I saw it, and yes, I handled it. It emerged from a wall safe hidden behind a small painting, in a basement. I offered $5,000 to get it for the Walters but was turned down.

A few weeks after our visit to Troyes and Lirey, a short article on me and my shroud ideas appeared in L’Est éclair. Jean-Michel’s big article, titled “Cet Américain ne croit pas au Saint-Suaire,” which made the front page of the Sunday magazine section for January 14, 2018, is an in-depth interview about my forthcoming “livre explosif.” I’m shown standing in front of a text panel just to the right of the gate to the Lirey church grounds. Not only is that panel the creation of Alain Hourseau, his Geoffroi de Charny tunic and battle gear appear just behind me, photographed as he set them at the very spot where Geoffroi died in battle, near Poitiers, on September 19, 1356.
