Chapter Nine

Grady and Ben

Ben pulled their new SUV up to the side of the cottage, put it in park, and turned off the ignition. He turned to look at the gorgeous man sleeping soundly in the reclined bucket seat beside him. Grady had worked the night shift before they’d loaded up and headed out, and Ben was reluctant to wake him. However, there was no way he would leave his boyfriend crammed in the seat when spacious beds were only feet away.

“Babe, we’re here. Wake up,” he whispered, not wanting to startle him.

Grady began to move and stretched his arms above his head before opening his big brown eyes and gazing at Ben. “Hey, we’re here already? That was fast.”

“No comments about my driving, you were asleep.”

“Sure, Andretti.” Grady smiled before leaning over for a kiss Ben was happy to give.

The touch of his soft lips never failed to excite Ben, but he held himself in check. Grady needed rest after a long shift protecting Brighton. “Let’s get you inside, sweetheart.”

“I like the sound of that,” Grady playfully growled, pulling Ben in for another kiss. Several moments later both were breathing heavily, and the windows began to fog.

“Come on, you need to get some more rest, there’s plenty of time for that later.”

Grady frowned, but whatever complaint he was going to level lost its effectiveness when he yawned. Ben laughed and opened the driver’s door, walked to the back and retrieved their bags, and headed to the front door behind his drowsy lover. Ben still had the occasional twinge of pain in his shoulder from the gunshot wound he’d sustained, but other than that, he was back to full strength.

The Mason family’s light blue cottage stood with its wood shutters closed and door locked tight. No one had been here since his mom and aunts had come up to set everything to right after the mess with Grady’s father. Ben had brought along new bedding, food, drinks, and whatever else they might need for their little getaway.

Ben noticed Grady pause before putting the key into the lock on the door. There were a lot of not-so-happy memories here, and Ben hoped they had made the right decision to create new memories.

Grady squared his shoulders and turned to look at Ben. “Are you okay with all of this?”

Ben should have known that while he was worried how this would affect Grady, his man would do the same for him. Ben set their bags down and took his amazing man into his arms.

“I want us to be able to come here. I’ve always loved this place.” Ben had enjoyed staying at the lake as often as possible, and he refused to let some asshole take that away from him.

Grady looked at him for a few seconds, nodded, and turned to unlock the door. Of course, it opened with a squeal of disuse, and the interior was dark. However, as soon as he had a chance, he’d open the shutters and let the light and fresh air flow in.
