George found the return flight from Tenerife South to Cardiff a lot less onerous than the outbound journey. Spending a week in Suzieâs company without the escape of work had been just as challenging as heâd anticipated, but now it was almost over. And thereâd been certain benefits to the week, which he thought about often during the flight. In some ways, he told himself, the holiday had worked out better than he could have hoped. Suzie was grateful to him for one thing â and another. And Amelia had played a blinder. What a great little actress. Exactly as heâd planned. Sheâd followed the script with aplomb.
Suzie unwrapped a fruit sweet after about an hour and offered him one, which he declined.
âIâm so very glad we went to Tenerife, George,â she said. âAnd youâve been wonderful. You saved me from drowning. And then⦠and then you said you were willing to try for a baby again. I canât tell you how much that means to me. It is like a dream come true. I know there are challenges ahead after everything that happened before. Nothing is guaranteed, not in this world. But Iâm going to pray so very hard and beg for Godâs favour. And if I do get pregnant again, give birth, and am blessed with a boy, Iâm sure heâll have your good looks. And if itâs a girl, Iâm certain sheâll be beautiful, too.â
A baby? Good luck with that, thought George, resisting the impulse to laugh. The one advantage of a vasectomy was as much sex as he wanted without any danger of responsibility. And now Suzie was up for it again, spreading her legs, an acceptable backup position if Amelia or some other local hottie wasnât available. He could always close his eyes and fantasise. Anything tight, wet and warm was better than nothing.
âHave you thought any more about our financial position?â he asked, thinking it an opportune time.
Suzie paused, silent for a second or two, which George saw as a good thing. It gave him hope. She usually repeated the same predicable rebuffs, snubs and refusals as soon as he asked the question. He listened intently, keenly anticipating her reply, sensing that maybe something had changed.
âUm, yes, yes I have,â Suzie began, speaking slowly and clearly, as if making a statement in court. âActually, Iâve been giving it a lot of thought. And Iâve decided that, at the very least, you deserve me to give your requests some serious consideration. No promises, but Iâm not saying no out of hand.â
It wasnât exactly what George had hoped for, not the unequivocal âyesâ. But it seemed to be progress nonetheless. The bitch, he thought, was softening. Maybe he was finally getting somewhere. About time! Or would she let him down again?
âYou said consideration. What do you mean by that exactly?â
Suzie popped another sweet into her mouth, talking while sucking, seemingly now more confident in what she was saying. A lot less formal.
âAs soon as we get back home, Iâm going to speak to my father.
