The Malfosse Ditch - A Deeper Look

As we saw in the Introduction to this book,Fore Wood contains a set of deep ravines called ghylls (sometimes written as 'Gills'). The largest of these ghylls is suggested locally to be a possible location for the Malfosse Ditch where Norman French (Franci) horsemen perished as they rode heedless in the dark or were ambushed by Anglo-Saxons during the Battle of Hastings, portrayed by the head-over-heels tumbling of the Norman horses in the Bayeux Tapestry (see below).

As we saw also, the term Malfosse is usually given as ‘evil ditch’, and a ‘fosse’ in English can mean a moat, ditch or excavation, but ‘foss’ in Norse can be taken to mean ‘waterfall’ (cascade, rush or foam). The word ‘ditch’ seems to have indicated a man-made feature, possibly a palisade with upward-facing spiked poles, however the early writers are confused as to exactly what happened. I am writing a separate book on the History of the Malfosse Incident.
