Elise stood at the market stall, trying to keep a smile on her face while Jay pondered over the silken ribbons the stall-keeper had to offer.
“I want me lass tae shine as bright as she can,” he told the stall-keeper happily. “We’re tae be wed soon, an’ she’ll be lookin’ pretty as a picture when we dae.”
“Oh!” the woman said brightly, smiling at Elise. “How excitin’! I remember when me sister married Gary. She’s never been so excited or felt so bonny since, she tells me! Dae ye have yer gown picked out? Lucy, she had a gingerline gown, the finest thing either of us has ever worn.”
Nay, I havenae picked out me gown, because I’m bein’ kidnapped and wed against me will.
But she couldn’t say that out loud, of course, not when Jay still held her arm a mite too possessively. Not when she knew he had his dirk in easy reach at all times.
So instead, Elise smiled as openly as she could fake and said, “Nay, I dinnae ken yet. I’m sure Jay will pick me out somethin’ wonderful.”
Or at the very least, somethin’ he likes the look o’ me in.
The look on Jay’s face when she chanced a glance at him confirmed it, and it sent revulsion spinning down her spine.
This morning, when she’d awakened in his arms, she’d felt comfortable for a second while her eyes remained closed. In her half-awake state, she’d believed it was Logan. That everything had been a bad dream, and here she was, in her lover’s arms, safe and secure. That it was Logan’s breath warming the back of her neck, and to Logan’s closeness to which her early-morning body was reacting.
The swooping feeling hadn’t been in her gut, but lower, and as his hand traveled down her belly, Elise’s breath caught in wild anticipation. He was going to touch her, what she’d dreamed of since she was still half a girl. They were going to be together at last.
His lips had been on her shoulder and his hand inching down, and she muttered, “Logan.”
The hand stopped, its nails digging into Elise’s stomach almost painfully, and it had jolted her awake.
Nae Logan. Nae Logan!
“Jay!” she yelped, pulling away from him. When she turned to face him, she saw deep anger—hatred even—burning in those eyes.
“Disappointed, are ye?” he hissed. “Thought I was someone else, did ye?”
Elise had flinched, sure he was going to hurt her again. But instead, he’d slid out of bed, his hardness as apparent as his anger. “Jay, please,” she whispered.
Jay snorted in disgust. “Dinnae ye worry. I’m nae gonnae touch ye, nae until we’re wed well an’ proper. On our weddin’ night, ye’ll be beggin’ for me so much ye will nae even remember Logan’s name.”
“An’ if I refuse?”
He’d smiled that cold, angry smile. “I’ve told ye this already. If ye refuse, then Logan dies,” he’d said simply. “Yer mither dies. Yer faither. Perhaps the Laird an’ all, if I feel so inclined.” He stretched and yawned. “Now,
