CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Ruby turned out the rather bright overhead light, leaving the sitting room bathed in the cozy glow of the two smaller table lamps. That was better. It had been years since Mike had brought anyone to meet her and she didn’t want to scare the girl away.

Although she was now in her late sixties, a fact she found hard to believe, just where did those years go, her fashionably short hair remained mid-brown courtesy of Clairol, and although thickening at the waist, her still-trim figure was clothed in black slacks and a cream jumper. It wasn’t what people expected, but then neither were her modern semi and IKEA style furniture, all light, bright and airy, no trace of ethnic throws, dark curtains, and certainly no crystal ball. But then, she’d never needed them.

Sure, she was used to the surprised and somewhat disappointed expressions on new clients’ faces who had been expecting a little gray old lady in a darkened room, as if such illusions somehow gave credibility to the title of medium, but the gifts that were a second nature to her, a sixth sense that was at times almost more powerful than her other five, also meant that none of these clients ever left with any doubt about her abilities. So as far as she was concerned, there was absolutely no need to compromise her good taste to give reassurances that were ultimately unnecessary. And although not entirely true, she believed these tools to be the instruments of charlatans, and sadly there were plenty of them about, ready to take money from unhappy people in exchange for dubious information from the other side. Still, she philosophized, that was the way of the world, always had been and always would be. Why waste your time and energy fighting a battle you could never win?

Not ever having been an enthusiastic chef, she’d opted for a buffet style meal courtesy of Marks & Spencers and the pullout pine table by the window was set with plates of cold Chinese chicken legs, Indian style nibbles, and various salads. She had, however, made some biscuits like she used to when Mike was a child and there was a large dish of them on the coffee table. It didn’t matter how old he got, as far as she was concerned, he would forever remain the bright cheeky chappie he was at ten years old. The surface might change and the outlook might become more sophisticated but that’s who he would remain inside. And now he was bringing a young lady to see her, she thought cheerfully. A young lady with bad dreams. Those didn’t worry her too much, dreams were never as complicated as people seemed to think, and nine times out of ten, you could get to the bottom of those with some good old-fashioned common sense.

Maybe this girl would be the one for him. There was an exciting thought. It would be so nice to see him settled down and starting a family, to have children around to fuss and spoil.
