Chapter Three

New York City. Three Years Earlier.

One Day Before Weylock’s Possession.

Special Agent Jaxon Weylock entered the Brooklyn Church and took in the surreal sight before him. As a Catholic, a former altar boy, and a New Yorker, he’d visited this small house of worship many times over the years. He had sat in those same pews, attended mass within these hallowed walls, and mumbled a prayer or two with all the other faithful. But this was the first time he’d seen the church filled with cops and forensic guys busy cataloging a murder scene.

Weylock searched the faces of the officers and located the man he was looking for.

Detective Gordon McGill, a tall, wiry fellow with a long face and zero body fat on his frame, watched in grave silence, almost as if he were the Grim Reaper himself, as the forensic team went about their gruesome business. They circled the victim whose corpse lay splayed out on the altar like a sacrifice to some primitive deity who demanded far more grisly acts of devotion from his followers than the God to whom this house of worship was dedicated.

The officers shot Weylock curious glances, but a quick flash of his badge confirmed what his black suit and attitude already told to them—he was a Fed. Perhaps a few of the cops recognized him from a previous case he’d consulted on or some TV report heralding him as a rising star at the bureau’s Behavioral Analyst Unit. Weylock had developed a solid rep for being the go-to-guy for strange crimes—plus he had recently put some high-profile super serial killers behind bars.

This latest murder investigation deserved an honorary place on the weirdness chart. No wonder McGill had called him in on this one. The dead priest was the second victim in less than a week, and Weylock was still struggling to work up a profile that might shed some light on these crimes.

Both victims had been members of the clergy. First an imam, and now a Catholic priest. In the last cases, the killer had carved out the imam’s heart and replaced the organ with a copy of the Koran. Weylock had a good idea what piece of literature was embedded between the priest’s diaphragm and sternum.

“Welcome to the party, Weylock,” Detective McGillis said, having noticed his arrival. “Two murders in less than a week. The bastard is on a roll.”

Weylock nodded as he drew closer to the dead priest laid out on the altar. One of the forensic guys stepped aside, looking relieved to be taking a break from the gruesome photoshoot. The priest’s lifeless gaze was fixed on the church’s ceiling in wide-eyed shock, as if he was stunned that God hadn’t answered the prayers of a loyal servant during his last moments.

As an FBI profiler and expert on the criminal mind, Weylock knew that the Devil was real. But he didn’t sport horns or wield a pitchfork. He looked a lot like the face in the mirror. Profiling human monsters
