Chapter 16

Olivia placed her card with the receipt of where she had ordered a wedding gift on the table piled with beautifully wrapped gifts.

She glanced around the room full of people she didn’t know.

“Olivia! I’m so glad you are here. You’re late.” Alexandra grabbed her hand and pulled her over to an older-looking couple. “I want you to meet my mom and dad. Olivia, this is Rebecca and Edward Montgomery.”

“Olivia, I’m so glad to meet you.” Rebecca extended an elegant hand dripping with diamonds. “Alexandra tells us you’ve been helping her a great deal with the wedding.”

Olivia took the woman’s hand and nodded. “Nice to meet you. I don’t know about a great deal. But I have been helping where I can.”

“Hello, Olivia.” Her father, Edward, extended his hand.

“Nice to meet you.” Olivia shook his hand and smiled. She noticed the Rolex on his wrist and suddenly felt very out of place in her yellow sundress and flat shoes. She self-consciously pulled her hair around her neck to help hide her fake pearls.

“Alexandra tells us you are the owner of the Roses and Lace Flower Shop.” Mr. Montgomery lifted his chin.

“Yes, sir. I am. I’m very excited about making the flower arrangements for the wedding.”

“Alexandra showed us a picture of the flowers you are able to procure. That’s a pretty impressive feat for such a small town.” Mr. Montgomery held her gaze, unsmiling.

“It does help we have a flower farm right here in Harland Creek.” She chuckled.

“You must love flowers enough to leave a career as a nurse.” Mrs. Foster took a sip of champagne out of a fluted glass.

“Yes, well, I suppose it takes a few tries to find out what we are good at.” Olivia shrugged.

“Would you like a glass of champagne?” Alexandra asked.

“I’m not really a big drinker but since this is a special occasion, why not.” Olivia followed Alexandra over to the sideboard where glasses of champagne were lined up.

Alexandra handed her one.

“Thank you.” She frowned. “Are you not drinking?”

“Not tonight. I’m so nervous, I’ve been eating everything in sight. Remember how I’d eat like a pig before every exam when we were in nursing school?”

Olivia laughed. “Yes. And then you wouldn’t eat for a day to make up for it.”

Alexandra sighed. “By the time this wedding is over, I’m going to be as big as an elephant.”

“Not with your metabolism.” Olivia took a small sip.

“Come on and let me introduce you to the rest of the wedding party.” Alexandra gently pulled her over to a group of women who were all laughing at a little girl.

“Everyone, this is my friend, Olivia.”

They all turned their attention to her. The women were dressed in cocktail attire and had their hair and makeup done professionally.

“Hello,” she said quietly.

“This is Heidi; she’s my sister and matron of honor and mother of little Jessica here with all the energy. This is Louisa, my cousin, who is also a bridesmaid. This is Delores, my other cousin. And this is Jessica, my flower girl and niece.
