Before I can read any more, I feel bile sliding up my throat.

“I didn’t kill Sage,” Beckham breathes, dropping the piece of paper to the ground. “I didn’t kill Sage.”

Kai shoves past me, out the front door, then I hear him throwing up onto the grass.

I can’t breathe, oxygen feeling too far and too thick and my lungs feeling small and drenched in anxiety.

Beckham whispers again, turning to look at me. “I didn’t kill Sage.”

I find his blue eyes filled with tears, and then I take a step away from him, shaking my head. “You didn’t kill Sage.”

Beckham turns to look at Marten, who’s sitting at the table watching this information destroy our reality, and he clears his throat.

“Thanks for letting me know, Marten.”

Marten nods as he stands up to leave. “Sure, son. Your house arrest was terminated. Just don’t leave the county till we get you into court, got it?”

“Sure,” Becks says, walking Marten to the door as Kai comes back inside, his arm over his mouth. “Thank you again.”

Marten turns to look inside before Becks closes the front door, and it feels like he’s looking at all three of us when he speaks now. “Try to stay out of trouble, okay?”

“You got it,” Becks says, his voice still shaking from shock, then he closes the front door and puts his back to it. “I didn’t kill Sage.”

“You didn’t fucking kill Sage, but who did?” Kaiden says, his features showing his renewed rage.

“Oh my god,” I say, putting my fingers to my lips. “Oh my god.”

They both look at me, and my eyes fill with tears as a wave of anxiety passes through me. “Oh my fucking god, what did I do?”

I look across the room to Beckham, and his eyes are an ocean of sadness and pain. Taking a step toward him, tears stream down my face. “Becks.”

“Don’t,” he says, shaking his head, trying to back up away from me, but he’s already against the door. I feel a stabbing pain slice through my chest, and then Kai’s hand comes down on my shoulder.

“Go sit down, Vincent.”

Shaking my head, I look at Kai and find something serious in his eyes, so I turn and go to sit on the couch.

“Becks,” Kaiden says, walking toward Beckham. “Let’s talk, okay?”

“No,” Becks says, shaking his head. “Can you guys leave? I don’t want to do this.”

“Beckham,” I plead from the couch, and his eyes find me. “Please.”

“What is there to say?” Beckham asks, putting his arms around his torso. “You can’t just expect me to be okay right now, not after everything.”

“I know,” Kaiden says. “We know. But we need to talk about this, and we all need to stick together and figure out who killed our girl.”

My lungs are burning with panic, and I gasp for air.

“Just… please, leave,” Beckham says quietly, sidestepping both of us and slowly walking backwards to the hallways, like he can’t take his eyes off of us, like he’s worried we’re going to attack him. My head feels light and dizzy, and I want to scream at the top of my lungs.
