Later that evening, Raymond sat at home cradling a large glass of whisky in his hands, while staring blankly into space. He felt numb and empty. What had he done? And all for nothing.

The telephone rang shrilly, cutting the silence like a knife.

For a moment he hesitated and then shakily raised the receiver to his ear. ‘Hello?’

There was a hissing silence and then a breathy voice said: ‘I know what you did.’

Why The Fly House?’

Tom jumped out of the car and gazed at the whitewashed cottage embraced by sweeping lawns and fulsome foliage. It looked as though it had been abandoned to the encroaching greenery and as such was just what Tom had hoped for. It was to be their French pied-à-terre for ten days: the restful summer vacation both he and his wife Ruby needed desperately. It had been a tough old year and they were both a little ragged around the edges.

Ruby joined him, gazing at their new temporary home, smiling with satisfaction at the prospect.

‘I’ve no idea why it’s called The Fly House, but it’s very pretty,’ she said, linking her arm through Tom’s.

‘I fully expected some sort of conservatory stuck on the end with a whole lot of angled windows looking like the eyes of a giant fly.’

Ruby laughed. ‘Let’s unload the car and get unpacked, then a glass of something alcoholic, eh?’

Tom nodded with a grin.
