Chapter 43

Detective Cato called Larry to confirm the meeting for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the newsstand. The request was to have Mike there so that the detectives could ask him a few questions. Larry agreed with the detectives and requested that the yearbook be returned. The detectives would bring the yearbook to the meeting later that day. The pages that displayed the photos of the four victims had been xeroxed and placed in the crime scene files.

Mike had finished his paper route a little early on Tuesday afternoon. It could have been in anticipation of the meeting with the police or that he wanted Henry’s property back. Either way, Mike wanted to get this over with and get the book back into the box of books in the attic.

He drove his bike down the middle of the streets as he had done so many times before. This time in the late afternoon, there were more cars on the road, and a game of dodge-the-traffic was being played by Mike and the drivers. Mike finally arrived at the newsstand, and Larry was there in the doorway as usual.

“You made it,” Larry said to Mike.

“I am a bit nervous. What do these detectives want from me?” Mike asked Larry.

“They just want to ask a couple of questions. Then you will be out of here.”

“I have to get home for dinner in a few minutes.”

“I’ll make sure you get home in time for dinner.”

Just at that moment, a car pulled up and parked next to the newsstand building. Two detectives got out of the car and walked toward the newsstand.

“Hi, Mike? I am Detective Cato, and this is my partner, Detective Douglas.”

“Nice to see you both,” Mike said nervously. “I’m Michael John Peters.”

“Hi, Larry.”

“Detectives, welcome. Come right in,” Larry said as he motioned them into the newsstand office.

The other paperboys were all out delivering the Tuesday edition of the Chicago Today. The office was empty except for Detective Cato, Detective Douglas, Larry, and Mike.

“Mike has to get home for dinner, so can we hurry this up?” Larry asked the detectives.

“Sure, no problem,” answered Detective Cato. “So, Mike, how did you find this yearbook and realize that the four names were in the senior section of the book?” Cato asked.

“I was talking with Larry over a few days about the murders or suicides of these four individuals. I told Larry I was going to solve them. Larry thought I was crazy. You know, I want to be a detective when I grow up. Just like you two.”

“That is an admirable goal, Mike,” Detective Cato said. “Go on, Mike—finish your thoughts.”

“Well, when I kept reading about the stories and the victims, I noticed that they were all around twenty-two or twenty-three years of age. I thought it was a funny coincidence that they were all young. They had their whole lives ahead of them. Then, when I started to talk to Larry, a light bulb went off in my head. What if they were all
