CHAPTER EIGHT

IT HAD BEEN a while since Nico had performed such delicate and intricate surgery but he soon found his confidence surging back as he set about the familiar routine. As he had feared there was damage to one of the major muscles in the boy’s arm and he attended to that first, painstakingly piecing everything back together. Although Yanni would probably suffer some after-effects—possible weakness in the arm or a lack of co-ordination—Nico knew that his swift intervention would save the boy years of heartache and was pleased. Maybe he should think about utilising his skills to help other people in Yanni’s position?

It was the first time that he had reconsidered his decision to forsake surgery and it was unsettling. He had been so sure of what he was doing but all of a sudden everything seemed to be up in the air. He forced the disturbing thoughts from his head as he concentrated on the job at hand, tidying up the flap of skin before stitching it back into place with the most exquisitely tiny stitches. Sofia, who was acting as lead theatre nurse, shook her head.

‘I did not know it was possible to produce work like this, Doctor. It’s amazing!’

‘I’d be rather good at embroidery, don’t you think?’ Nico replied, smiling at her over his mask.

‘Very good. I know who to ask if I need my wedding dress embroidered!’

Everyone laughed and it helped to lighten the rather tense mood. Although they were all skilled professionals, Nico knew that none of them had dealt with this type of situation before. Leonardo, the young doctor he had hired a couple of weeks earlier, seemed particularly fascinated so Nico made sure that he could see what he was doing. Maybe he should also think about passing on his skills to some of the younger doctors? he mused. After all, it seemed a shame to possess all this knowledge and not make use of it.

By the time everything was sorted it was five a.m. and he could tell that everyone was as exhausted as he was. ‘Thank you all,’ he said, looking around the small group who had worked so hard to support him. ‘You’ve done a wonderful job and it’s thanks to you that Yanni should regain full use of his arm eventually.’

He was deeply touched when a spontaneous round of applause broke out and had to leave Theatre in rather a rush in case he broke down. He felt incredibly emotional and put it down to being back in Theatre after such a long absence, although deep down he suspected that there was more to it than that.

He went to find Helena and Philo, who had spent the night in Reception. They leapt to their feet when he appeared and he saw the fear on their faces and understood. Now that he had a child of his own, he knew how it must feel to fear the worst.

‘Yanni is fine,’ he said, swallowing the lump in his throat that thought evoked.
