By the time Abagnale appeared on To Tell the Truth, he had already made a return visit to the Friendswood community—not far from Camp Manison. This time, on January 27, 1978, he was invited as the keynote speaker at a gala dinner at the Friendswood Golfcrest Country Club. This time he made page one! There was no connection to Camp Manison ’74.

At the Golfcrest, banquet guests sipped on cocktails and carved their prime rib, all for $15. They listened to the keynote speaker telling the most imaginative of tales—never suspecting that one of his most audacious feats was unfolding at that very moment. The man they were paying to admire had re-entered their community without them even realizing that he had been in their jail, masquerading in their community, stealing from their beloved kids’ camp. They were part of the con, without knowing.

It was the ultimate sleight-of-hand, dealing from the bottom of the deck.
