Chapter 17

The canoers had survived their encounter with the tsunami with no losses and few effects beyond frazzled nerves and the need to empty substantial amounts of water from their craft—with perhaps a little pee mixed in. They accomplished this quickly with ornately carved traditional wooden bailing scoops. The wave was far beyond them, having rounded the north end of West Seattle while reflecting off Magnolia Bluff, the net effect of which had been a hard turn southeast into Elliott Bay.

Although the main body of the wave was past, the canoe flotilla was by no means at rest. The surface of the Sound heaved chaotically. Mighty peaks of water rose and fell all around them. The canoes were lifted high and then dropped low in gut-churning plummets that felt like a mad roller-coaster ride. And each time they rose high, the occupants could see huge reflected waves crisscrossing Elliott Bay from shore to shore, intersecting with each other and rising doubly-tall one moment and dropping precipitously the next. The Sound’s surface had become a maze of crisscrossing waves that traveled nowhere but surged up and down repeatedly. It was no place for anyone prone to seasickness—or anyone even slightly fainthearted.

“I hope this is as rough as it gets,” Kenny Helm called from the stern of the Tatoosh. “I’ve never seen water like this before.”

“What do we do?” Arnie Musselshell called from the bow.

“Ride it out. Pullers, keep your paddles ready. We’re not out of this yet.”
