We passed a Precle highway sign, very large and high, supported by heavy steel girders, which said “weigh station,” so we must be near the old border. We traveled through a steep canyon along the Truckee River. The mountainsides here are quite bare of trees, although there are some dead snags that evince it was once forested. There is a new plant here called sagebrush, a low shrub, woody and gnarly, that is quite resinous and with leaves cut into three blunt teeth at the ends.
