Half an hour later, Alex was on her way to the school, box in hand. The street was busy at that time of day, full of bustle and movement, but her thoughts were far away, in the quiet office at Gordston’s Department Store. With Malcolm.

Can’t be too careful. She knew Lady Bullard was absolutely right. She saw it every day, with the poor girls at the school. Her own place was quite uncertain now. But she feared that when it came to Malcolm, she didn’t feel careful at all.

Chapter Eleven

Alex turned to wave at the girls in their second-storey window as she left Mademoiselle Gardinier’s after the afternoon lessons. As always after her work, she felt tired yet bolstered. The girls always made her laugh, made her appreciate everything in a new light. Despite the trials they had faced in their lives, they were always merry and curious, and always full of funny, sad and educational stories.

Alex wished she could ask for their advice. They knew much more of men than she did. Surely they could help her sort out all the feelings she had been having. The thoughts about Malcolm that kept her up at night.

‘Here, let me help you,’ a deep voice said and an arm in a fine blue-wool sleeve reached out.

A familiar voice. Startled, Alex looked up into Malcolm’s blue eyes. He smiled and the day turned even brighter.

She let him take the books, her breath caught in her throat. ‘How lucky you happened to be passing by, Mr Gordston!’ Then she remembered what he had said in his office—she should call him Malcolm.

His smile widened. ‘I do have a confession to make. I was waiting for you here.’

‘Waiting for me?’ Alex asked, startled.

‘Yes. I called at the Bullards’ and the butler said you were at Mademoiselle Gardinier’s.’

‘You wanted to see me about something?’

‘Yes, I—well, I don’t think we could talk long here. Shall we go to that café over there? Or are you expected back by Lady Bullard?’

‘No, my work is done for the day. I’d be happy to sit with you for a while.’ In truth, she was wildly excited at the chance to be with him for a while, to be near him. She wondered what he wanted to say to her so urgently.
