On the walk back from the park, I could barely look Elise in the eyes. I’d gone off the rails for no good reason. If I’d socked Shaun in the mouth, he most certainly would’ve called the cops. I’d almost gotten myself arrested, which I’d sworn would never happen again. Thankfully, I’d convinced my crazy ex, Amelia, to drop the charges. You spend one night in jail, and it’s one night too many.

“I can’t believe you went on a date with him. I thought Alex was just blowing smoke.” Elise and I stopped our strollers side by side at the crosswalk. “Not that it’s any of my business, but he’s not right for you.”

Though I busied myself fixing Abby’s shoe, I could feel Elise’s smile. “It wasn’t really a date. He invited me to the construction site of the new Generation Gamer headquarters downtown. It’s a work in progress, but he’s got a great view from the top floor. Anyway, he’s all alone in that big house. He needs companionship. And so do I.”

“I’m sure he does. But that doesn’t mean you have to be the one to give it to him. You should be—”

“I’ll be careful.”

“How do you know what I was going to say?”

The light turned, and we started across the street. “Because that’s what I would tell a friend. A good friend.”

Hearing her say “friend” so convincingly brought a sense of relief. Not that I needed convincing. But I couldn’t have Elise believing Shaun’s nonsense. I had no reason to be jealous.

“So are you going to tell Cassie?” she asked.

“About Shaun? I don’t think so. It would just wind her up. Besides, there’s nothing to tell. I barely pushed him.”

“I meant about Abby. Her first word. I remember you telling me you were worried about it.”

Guilt lashed me with its sharp tongue. Me and my big mouth. “It’s kind of a big deal. So, I should probably mention it.”

Elise shrugged. “Yeah. Cassie will be bummed though.”

“You think?” Of course, I knew she would be.

“There’s a good chance Abby will say ‘mama’ next. You should practice it with her. I know Cassie would be over the moon to hear her say that first. Especially after the walking thing. At the very least, I’m sure she’d want to be there to witness it.”

“I’ll think about it.” But it felt slimy, lying to my wife, even if it would make her happier in the end. “If you think about losing Shaun’s number.”

I expected her to laugh but she gripped my arm instead, regret darkening her eyes. “I’m sorry I was in the middle of it all. I ruined your day, and I only gave Alexandra more ammunition.”

“Hey, we got to hang out and talk music. It wasn’t a total bust.”

When we reached Diamond Street, Elise reached into the storage bag on the back of her stroller and withdrew her notebook. “Take this with you. Jot your ideas down, and we can compare notes at my next lesson. Who knows, maybe we’ll write a Grammy winner.
