Christmastime, Sarah would learn soon, was no joke in Cedar Creek. She didnât know how so many people from out-of-town had discovered that Christmas had officially and spontaneously begun in Cedar Creek, but the cafe was overwhelmed shortly after nine am by wave after wave of people âjust up from the city.â
They all seemed very perplexed about the lack of Christmas decorations in the cafe. Sarah overheard several customers speculating about why in hushed tones. So when Hollyâs helpers - two lovely high school kids named Josh and Fiona, showed up and got things running smoothly - she decided to do something about it.
She tucked away in the back, scrolling through her contacts in town. She was wondering how to get a hold of Bobby besides walking over to his house, and had just decided that this was her best option.
Fiona came striding back, excited. âSarah, wow. Thereâs a really hot old guy out there looking for you.â
For a moment, Sarahâs heart leaped, because she immediately thought of Rob Crowe, who was the only hot âoldâ guy she could think of. But when she looked up and into the bustling cafe beyond the counter, she saw Adamâs tousled sandy hair, hovering above the crowd.
Her heart fell, because she had really hoped to see Rob there today. He hadnât even messaged her yet, and while they werenât fervent communicators - they werenât in high school, after all - she felt like it was unusual that Rob hadnât contacted her after breaking their date a second time. It made her think something was definitely up with him, and she didnât like the feel of it.
She stood up and waved Adam back through the kitchen. Another cool thrill fluttered in her chest, and she felt guilty for it. But Adamâs warm smile and confident demeanor were certainly welcome on this crazy day.
âI thought Holly Lund owned this place?â Adam said, looking around. âBoy, is it busy in here.â He smiled, leaning in toward Sarah. âJust between you and me, though, I think people are a little confused about why there arenât any Christmas decorations up.â He looked behind him. âIâve got your back, though,â he confided.
âOh yeah?â Sarah asked. âHowâs that?â
âI just told everyone that Leila used them all at her diner.â
Sarahâs mouth fell open, and then she laughed. âI guess... thatâs a pretty good excuse,â she said. âBelievable.â
But it got her to thinking. âAdam,â she said, shyly. âYou wouldnât want to have my back for real, would you?â
âI can think of nothing better,â he said, and for a moment there was something serious - and, Sarah felt, a little dangerous - exchanged between them. âI hope you donât want me to make coffee, though,â he said. âThat machine looks complicated.â
Sarah laughed. âIt really isnât. I know because I mastered it myself. But no, that wasnât what I wanted. Itâs...â she peered over his shoulder, on her tiptoes. âItâs kind of a heist.â
âOooo,â Adam said, rubbing his hands together before taking his scarf off over his shoulders.
