THE TWINS AND THE OTHER clanswomen were not the only ones gossiping about Essen. Their bathing done and their hair dry, Deora, Glenna and three of the sisters sat in Glenna’s sitting room on the second floor of the Keep, talking about the odd reaction Patches had to the stranger. Abruptly, Patches stuck her head in the door, announced Essen was staying a day or two more, and then hurried down the stairs with Blue still at her heels.

Deora kept her voice down just in case. “She may not know it, but our Patches is smitten.”

“And he with her,” Carley added amid nods from the others.

Ceanna took another stitch in the kilt she was mending for her son. “And since when is Patches fond of dogs?”

“My baby has grown up,” Glenna sighed.

“But mother, therein lies the problem,” said Ceanna. “We have favored her too much, and she might well frighten the lad away before he is truly in love. She is too bold.” Ceanna got no argument from the others.

Matchmaking was Deora’s favorite delight. “If only we could keep him here until Justin comes home. My husband would know what to do.”

Carley smiled, “Aye, but we told Essen we do not capture, remember?”

Glenna laughed. “How stupid of us.” She waited a moment for the giggles to die down. “There must be some way to see they spend time together other than when we take our meals. With all of us together, it is not likely they will talk to each other directly.”

“They had no trouble talking to each other directly last night. I believe she was thinking of throttling him,” said Deora.

“You were very quiet last night,” Glenna said.

“I miss my husband. Besides, I found the lad fascinating. What a story he tells.” Deora paused to think for a moment. “Perhaps we might seat him next to her when we take our meals.”

“Nay, seat them where they cannot see each other,” Carley suggested.

Glenna playfully glared at her daughter. “You are too cruel, Carley. I will seat them much as we were last night, so they can hardly avoid looking at each other.”

Normally quiet of late, all were surprised when Brenna spoke up. “I like him, but his clothes are nearly worn out. We cannot send him away in those same clothes now that the clans think him daft. I fear he’ll be put upon by others.”

“She is right,” said Carley.

Brenna bit her lower lip. “My husband could give him new clothing, but will Essen think less of us for suggesting it?”

“He might welcome our interference. Did he not say he had to steal larger clothing as he grew?” asked Glenna. “If we offer, he will not need to steal.”

Carley agreed. “Besides, he said he wears the clothing of his banished father, and how long will it be before the clans believe he too has been banished?”

“Aye, a banished lad...” Ceanna suddenly caught her breath. “He said he killed Trallen’s husband. If the Kennedys saw him, they might have followed him here.
