The Scarlet Queen watched from a window from high above the town.

“What is it, Mama?” Sam asked from his seat by the fire. He sipped warm milk laced with honey and wore a creamy white moustache on his upper lip.

“Wipe your mouth, Sam,” she instructed. He used his sleeve. “Use a napkin next time, my little one.” She returned her gaze to the window.

She could feel the presence of the dark ones and smiled a little as they feasted upon the seafarers occupying her huts and ships moored on her docks.

They would need their strength, she thought. Takmel had told her so.

“With winter coming,” he had said, “they will need to sleep. Before they sleep, they will need food.”

So, she watched through the window as the dark creatures scurried through the township; as they crawled over the snow-covered huts and clambered over the vessels secured to the pier.

It was all a part of his plan.
