Geronimo and Freeze Pop were, in fact, running. The two of them were hustling up the slow ascent of submerged pipe once they noticed the video from the security camera that showed the chopper unguarded. Freeze Pop guessed that the polar bears had all gone to lunch, since they often ate three to five lunches per day. The only problem was that Geronimo and Freeze Pop had not seen the bears leave and had no idea when they’d return. Nonetheless, they now found themselves at the door to the rooftop. Freeze Pop opened the panel in the wall beside the door. He switched on the video screen and selected the rooftop camera footage. The screen still showed the unguarded space chopper.

“Still no guards,” said Freeze Pop.

“They could come back any minute,” said Geronimo.

“Which is why we go out now!” said Freeze Pop. With that, he hopped high enough to land on Geronimo’s head, springboard off of it, and land onto the door handle. Freeze Pop’s weight slowly lowered the handle as he began to slide off the slanting foothold. The door clicked open and swung gently outward. Sunshine blinded the both of them. Geronimo tiptoed onto the rooftop. He kept his body flat against the wall of the staircase. The hot gravel burned into his black, rubber shoes. Freeze Pop swung off the lowered handle of the door and landed with ease onto the rooftop gravel.

“Let’s go!” he told Geronimo as he ran toward the chopper. As Geronimo followed him, the gnome noticed a white flash in the corner of his eye. It was a trap, Geronimo thought. He scurried back to the wall and re-splayed himself against it. He watched his new, furry, little friend get scooped up by the polar bear in the security uniform and thrown high into the air. Geronimo watched as other bears appeared from the other end of the rooftop. They had been hiding from a distance that was beyond the view of the rooftop cameras. They were all dressed in security uniforms with their backs turned away from Geronimo, dumbly admiring Freeze Pop’s trajectory, captivated by the arc formed by his poof-ball body floating through the air.

Geronimo took this opportunity to run completely unseen toward the space chopper. He hopped inside of it and onto the seat. He looked over at the small army of bears to the left of him. They were still following Freeze Pop’s descent as his body hurdled down toward the forest treetops. He looked back at the controls. There were keys in the ignition. He looked out in front of him—nothing but sky. We must be twelve stories high, Geronimo thought. Like a slow-moving sunset, Freeze Pop’s body was still descending. He felt horrible about his little friend, but he knew this could be his only chance to move on with his mission.

He leapt onto the metal keys. The force of his impact turned the key and started the chopper’s engine, lifting the vehicle into the air. The bears ran over to the rising chopper and clawed at the chopper’s bottom rails, to no avail.
