Actually being back in Lewisia felt a lot different than lying on the couch with Hazel, telling her all her grand plans.
It was the same old town with the same people Jo spent her entire life surrounded by. The house looked the same, and even though Benjamin had grown an inch since the beginning of the summer, the family was all the same too.
But it all felt smaller, tighter, more claustrophobic even in the middle of Big Sky Country.
Jo got home late on Friday, and her mom spent the whole afternoon fussing over her, making sure she was happy and healthy after a month away. The fourth was on Sunday, with extended family coming to the house to celebrate, and Jo would spend a good portion of Monday flying back to Chicago. That left Saturday to find the right time to make her announcement, and she decided sheâd do it after dinner.
That way, if things didnât go how she envisioned, she could go to bed and the next day all their cousins and aunts and uncles would be there, leaving them with no further time for awkwardness.
It was a good plan, and Hazel kept sending encouraging texts all day long, but the closer the time came, the more Jo questioned her decision. Did she really know her parents, and how theyâd react? Or was she just being hopeful? Sheâd heard rumors about her great uncle in Butte being gay, and her mom and dad were just happy for him finding a âroommateâ who made him happy. But when it was their daughter, would things be different?
They were all sitting at the picnic table in the back yard, citronella candles burning to keep the mosquitos at bay. It was getting dark, and Jo had already relayed pretty much all her news from Chicago already â except the stuff that had to do with Hazel. The important stuff.
âEverybody ready for dessert?â her mom asked, standing. âI made a peach pie for tomorrow, and I had extra filling so I turned it into cobbler for tonight.â
âSounds great, Iâm gonna put a pot of decaf on to go with,â Dad said.
âIn this heat?â Mom asked, shaking her head. âYouâre gonna be sweating eating that cobbler.â
âItâll be worth it,â Dad answered. âKids, clear the table, will you?â
Jo and Benjamin stood, gathering plates.
âJosephine, you barely touched your hamburger mac,â Mom said with a frown when she noticed her nearly full plate. âYou feeling okay?â
âJust didnât have much of an appetite tonight, sorry,â Jo said.
âYou coming down with something? There are so many people in that city, itâs amazing theyâre not all sick all the time.â Her mom put the back of her hand on Joâs forehead.
âMomâ¦â Jo pulled away. âActually, I wanted to talk to you all about something.â
No time like the present. Anyway, the longer the meal dragged on, the more she felt her nerve slipping away. By the time the cobbler came out, she would have talked herself out of the whole idea.
âI hope
