She ran down the path, dragging Adam after her. Her heavy flesh jolted on the hard path. There was a cleared area under the shadow of the big trees at the side of the field. It was surrounded with wire. The air was gritty. Inside the wire were the burnt remains of chicken coops. And everywhere, against the wire, in the trees beyond it, were feathers, feathers and the half-burned corpses of chickens. In a pit, in the run itself, some fifty scorched birds were lying in an open grave which Frank had clearly been filling with earth. ‘There,’ Naomi said, ‘there.’ She gave Adam a look of accusing triumph. ‘Now keep away from here,’ she said, ‘because that’s what your great man did. Now stay away. You and everyone else.’
