How am I to sleep on this night? All these years I’ve dreamt of this day, a root such as this. Dreams that are not only mine but my father’s and uncle’s. How many generations back, I do not know. And here it is, only a sunrise away. As I lie awake, through the bending redwood branches I peer at the stars, but it is impossible to watch any one star or constellation as they seem to blink on and off between the moving boughs. This high in the mountains, the forest is already preparing for winter and constantly wakes me up: pine cones fall with a dull thud, crickets jump across the crisp leaves. If I listen closely, I can hear the trees slip out of their coats, preparing for a dormant six months of winter. I can’t see the plant, but like a person’s spirit, I know it is there.

The night descended on the mountain in a sprint. But now it dodders by.
