Early in the fall, Lauren Berlant had contacted me again about that workshop at the University of Chicago. She asked me what I thought I might do. She mentioned that somebody great had just been there in the same series, and the lecture was a success, but the workshop part had been kind of a flop because the person half-assed it. I don’t know if she used precisely that terminology, but something along those lines. When I read that I thought, “Holy crap, the smartest woman in the United States of America is inviting me to give a workshop—I’d better not half-ass it.” I decided to seriously overprepare.

I wrote Lauren back asking if she could get me the e-mail addresses of all the workshop participants one week in advance. I wrote up an assignment that I wanted to send them:
