Miles stared at the monitor. His eyes went wide in disbelief. “What the hell is that?”

Fifteen spectral images floated down the corridor, rapidly closing in on the treatment room.

“Should we warn them?” asked Joel.

Hae-jin shook her head. “It’s too late.”

Tanner was about to join the others in the corridor when something spectral grabbed his arms and threw him onto the floor. Daniel and Casey went to help him but were shoved against the wall by four other spirits that held them in place.

Tanner tried to stand. He was pulled off the floor, dragged across the room, and thrust into the reclining chair. He struggled to get up, but spectral hands held him in place. One by one, the straps wrapped around his wrists and ankles. The harder Tanner fought, the more violent became the efforts to hold him in place. Once his limbs were secured, the spirits placed the final strap across his chest and yanked tight, causing Tanner to wince.

“Get me out of here.”

Daniel and Casey were still held against the wall. Mac placed the camera on the floor and ran back in to help, only to be shoved against the opposite wall. Gayle was held in place, her arms pinned to her sides.

Tatyana tried to rush over to help. Although the spirits did not manhandle her as they did the others, they blocked her, preventing her from going to Tanner’s assistance. Nostradamus moved up alongside his mistress, growling at the unseen assailants.

The electrodes levitated off the floor and slid over Tanner’s temples. He violently shook his head to prevent it from happening to no avail. A leather band slipped over his temples and tightened, holding the electrodes in place.

The usually calm Tanner panicked. “Come on, guys. Get me out of here.”

“They won’t let us move,” said Daniel.

The power switch on the ECT machine moved to ON. The machine buzzed as electricity flowed through it and the main power light glowed white.

“How is that thing working without electricity?” asked Tatyana.

“They’re siphoning power from the beyond,” Nick explained.

The hum slowly grew louder as the spirits turned the power dial to its highest setting—two hundred and fifty volts.

“Screw you, man.” Tanner said it to no one in particular. “I’m not scared—”

The treatment button pressed. An intense electric shock coursed through Tanner. He cried out as his body stiffened and his limbs convulsed. The shock lasted five seconds before subsiding. Tanner moaned and rolled his head from side to side. He tried to get up but collapsed back into the chair. Turning his head to the others, he croaked out the word, “Help.”

The others tried to assist him, but the spirits restrained them.

“I address myself to the purest entities of the spiritual world,” said Tatyana. “I ask you to grant me the power to overcome fear and darkness. Forgive my sins and imperfections, cleanse my soul, and imbue me with the ability to confront and defeat the vile entities before me. By all that is good and holy, I bow in humility before you and ask that you cover me with the white light and protection of purity.
