CHAPTER ELEVEN

THIS WAS A bad idea.

No, scratch that.

This was a terrible idea.

Elena watched her reflection in the mirror, dabbing some night cream on her face and rubbing absently. She had known this already, had decided as much during all the hours spent mulling while working on Harper’s shelves. But it had been a fairly simple process before. The cons had outweighed the pros, and thus she’d decided not to ask Harper out, as much as she’d wanted to.

But she hadn’t accounted for the way Harper kissed.

She hadn’t accounted for the way her body had seemed to come alive under Harper’s touch.

Elena felt her entire being warm at the memory of the way Harper had made little sounds into her mouth. The way her hands had grasped Elena’s hips. The way she’d looked when they’d pulled away from each other, her lips puffy, her eyes dazed and happy and inviting Elena to kiss her again.

The memory of how Harper had smiled against her lips during that last, short kiss was the worst. At the time, it had felt like a gift, like something to be cherished. But now it only served to confuse her.

The main fact was that Harper wanted to settle down while Elena did not. That was the most glaring, the most impossible to overcome. If Elena abandoned her plans and dove into a relationship, where would it lead? Soccer was still her first priority. She didn’t want to go through another Claire situation again, never wanted to hurt someone the way she had unintentionally hurt Claire.

That by itself was enough to keep from pursuing things. In addition, she and Harper had just become friends. She didn’t want to mess that up. Why change a good thing and risk it going bad?

It was clear they were both attracted to each other, but plenty of people were attracted to each other. That didn’t make acting on the attraction a good idea, or the right thing to do. In fact, sometimes it was exactly the opposite. Elena could be an adult about the situation and simply ignore it. She was not going to throw away a friendship by making an impulsive decision based on being hormonal and lonely.

And, if Elena were being honest, those were definitely factors.

She hadn’t had sex with anyone since Claire. One time, a few months after her divorce had been made official, she’d tried to have a one-night stand with a woman she’d met at a bar, but she had failed spectacularly.

As a matter of principle, Elena believed
